SSC is one of only a very few clubs in SA catering
exclusively for
the flying of Thermal Soaring model gliders.
With the incredible development of electric motors
and modern
batteries, electric flying has become a reality and
many of our
members have become interested in silent powered flight.
For many years we have been based on Rondebosch Common.
A few years ago it became necesssary to find a new
field, and
we acquired the use of the Sports Fields at Youngsfield
Army Base,
but they started a development there, which meant
we
had to return to Rondebosch Common, the use of which
we had regained through the intervention of SAMAA.
Then the development on Youngsfield stalled for an
indefinite period and we were allowed back.
The mown grass surface and the ability to drive out
to the
middle to unload winches, batteries etc, make it a
much more
pleasant venue than the Common.
The Club's Newsletter, the Southeaster, is printed
ten times per year,
offering news and views from local and overseas writers.
It has gained a National and International reputation
and has been appointed the Official Disseminator of
Information
for the SA Model Gliding Association.
Membership includes substantial Third Party Liability
cover
(accidents involving aircraft are specifically excluded
from most Personal Liability policies)
and experienced members are always willing to offer
help and advice
on purchases of models and radios, and instruction
in flying.
The Club has an electric winch for launching models,
and
there are several elastic 'bungees' available once
a pilot has
gained the confidence to use them.
(Contrary to much advice, it is not wise for beginners
to use a bungee for their first few flights!)
